Weekly review

Saturday, November 2: Arrival day in Pythagorion, Samos. At 17:00 everyone can board their yacht and check-ins begin. This is followed by the opening dinner at Mermizelli’s and also the first briefing. There are strong winds (30-40 kts) coming up in the Cyclades, so the original plan is modified. We will cross as quickly as possible, to stay ahead of the strongest winds. Some boats set sail after dinner because of this weather forecast and the long distance ahead.

Diner in Samos

Sunday, November 3: Pythagorion – Finikas (105NM). It is decided to sail as far as possible before the weather deteriorates. Because of strong winds and long distance, we do not do a race today.

Monday, November 4: Finikas – Poros (75NM). With so much wind predicted in the Cyclades, we decided to cross from the Dodecanese to the Saronic Gulf in two days. So today again a long distance sailing, but because of that (if all goes well) we will have fine wind to sail races for the rest of the week! Today due to strong wind and long distance again no races.

Tuesday, November 5: Poros – Ermioni (20NM). Today is the first real day of racing! We start with a comprehensive regatta briefing, where all the rules and procedures of racing sailing are explained. Today’s course starts in the bay of Askeli, near Poros. We will then round an upper buoy, round the lower buoy and then set course for the finish line at Ermioni. Most of the race is sailed with a fair wind, allowing for some nice surfing on the waves. Oreo crossed the finish line first with a time of 3 hours, 18 minutes and 28 seconds!

Wednesday, Nov. 6: Ermioni – Perdika (30NM). Since we sailed mostly upwind yesterday, today we will do a race where we will do a lot of upwind cruising! We will start in the bay below Ermioni, round an upper buoy and a lower buoy and then set course for the finish line in Perdika. Since the wind and waves turned out to be harder than predicted, the finish line is changed to a virtual line between Poros and Modhi, shortening the race a bit. Athina is the big winner today!

Thursday, November 7: Perdika – Angistri (Race 1/2: 6NM). Today we do two shorter races! The first consists of a starting line between Perdika and Moni, followed by rounding an upper buoy at Marathonas, then rounding the island of Moni and finally finishing on an upwind course across the starting line. Only about 6NM of sailing in total, so all boats stayed nice and close to each other throughout the race making it very exciting. Kalamaki crossed the finish line first!

Thursday, November 7: Perdika – Angistri (Race 2/2: 6NM). Today’s second race is sailed in the same area as the first, so everyone is already somewhat familiar with the conditions. We start again on the same starting line between Perdika and Moni, then we round an upper buoy, then a lower buoy, then another upper buoy and then a downwind finish across the starting line. As you can see, the times are even closer together now! Portokali wins the fourth race!
