Co-sailing

Board the mother ship of a flotilla and sail with the experienced (and very sociable) skippers who guide the group. You don't need any experience, but of course you get to help with everything and you can learn a lot. You can embark by yourself, with other co-sailors, or choose to rent the yacht with your family, for example. A perfect stepping stone to join a flotilla the following year with your own yacht!

A co-sailing vacation with Portokali

Whether you are experienced or inexperienced, on your own, with your family or with a group of friends, co-sailing is a wonderful form of holiday for everyone. Every day you sail to a new destination and discover new places. You are on board with skippers who know the sailing area like the back of their hand and can therefore show you all the gems in the area.Active sailing and learning, or just relaxing on board and sunbathing on the foredeck with a book. It’s all possible. It’s your holiday and you do exactly what you like. If you want to help on board, you can, but the skippers can also sail the yacht all by themselves so you can relax. You sail the same route with a number of different yachts, so you meet lots of nice new people. Super fun of course, both for kids and parents/adults!

What is a co-sailing holiday?

If you are going to sail with us, you will sail aboard the mother ship of a flotilla. A flotilla is a group of yachts sailing the same route, guided by experienced flotilla leaders on a mother ship. And that’s where you can join them. Each day you sail to a new destination. Sometimes it’s a small, authentic fishing village, other times a quiet bay near an uninhabited island and other times a bustling town with a lively boulevard. Every day is different and that is what makes such a holiday so much fun. You never get bored, see a lot, meet lots of new people and during the day you sit on the water with the wind in your hair. Or you throw out the anchor in a beautiful bay to enjoy swimming and snorkelling. You sail around 4-5 hours during the day and moor in a small harbour or beautiful bay at the end of the afternoon. Then there is plenty of time to explore the area, relax and swim. In the evening, the flotilla generally has dinner together in a local restaurant. But. Nothing is compulsory of course – it’s your holiday after all! Request an offer for your preferred itinerary immediately below, or read more about co-sailing and what a co-sailing holiday costs.

More about co-sailing

Who is a cabin cruise suitable for?

In the summer months (July and August) it is mostly families with children who board our boats. This is very nice, because on the other boats in the flotilla there are often also families with children. Most of the children who go with their parents on sailing vacations are between 8 and 22 years old approximately. We always try to divide the flotilla/groups in such a way that the children’s ages fit together best.In this way, sailing with children is a lot of fun.Outside the real summer months (before July and after August) we regularly have other groups coming aboard. You can then board alone or with a partner, friend or girlfriend and share the boat with other co-sailors.You just book a bed/cabin per person and the cabins that remain free can be filled by other people. This way we often have a very nice mix of couples, singles and friends on board.

A day during a cabin cruise

What does a typical day of sailing with the flotilla look like at Portokali?Around 9 a.m., the flotilla leaders sit down with the skippers of the other boats at a café terrace to discuss the day’s route. Here they discuss everything for the coming day: about docking in the new port, the weather, the wind forecast, fun stops along the way and any things they need to watch out for.As a co-sailor, you can choose whether you want to be present and listen to the briefing, or whether you want to take this time to have a quiet breakfast or a cup of coffee. The flotilla leaders will be on board with you all day, so they can always catch up with you about the plans later.Or maybe they have already secretly revealed the new destination to you.Between 10:00 and 11:00 most yachts set sail.Until then, you can walk around the village or take a refreshing dip. Then it’s time to hoist the sails!A few hours of sailing and then we drop anchor in a beautiful bay.Goggles on, flippers on and snorkeling away! The water is beautifully clear and it is great fun to see how an anchor underwater hooks onto the bottom. After a nice lunch on board, we sailed for a few more hours to the next port. Around 4 p.m. we will dock and then slowly the rest of the flotilla boats will come in as well. The flotilla leaders will help them dock, so you will have the boat to yourself for a few hours.Freshen up and then explore the area or go for a swim: anything is possible.

What does a cabin cruise cost?

A cabin cruise costs between €550 and €995 per person per week. This varies, depending on the number of people you book with, how long you stay and what form you choose. There is also a slight difference in high season (July & August) and low season (everything outside). At Portokali, we offer co-sailing vacations in two variations:

  1. You book single spots aboard the mother ship.So with this option you can add other people besides your own party. This is often done by people traveling alone or with 2 or 3 people.
  2. The other option is to rent the mother ship. Here you reserve all the cabins on board for just your party. There are no other sailors on board.Of course, there will always be 2 Portokali skippers on board, who will occupy 1 cabin together. When you rent a 4 cabin yacht, you have 3 cabins for your party and you can board with a maximum of 6 people.

Prices* for both variants can be found below, for both high season and low season.

Loose spot(s)

If you book single co-sail spots, then you book including board cash. This means that all costs on board are included in the price. Also the costs for groceries for breakfast, lunch and a small drink at the end of a wonderful sailing day.The only additional costs are dinner (usually at a restaurant ashore) and your trip to and from the boat.
