Aegina - Monemvasia (Special!)

Unique itinerary to an undiscovered area out of reach of the masses. Departing from our own base on the island of Aegina, you can get just a little further than the rest and discover the beautiful southeast coast of the Peloponnese!

Monemvasia flotilla

When you sail for two weeks from Aegina, you can see so much. We come to a completely different area than where ‘the masses’ can come from Athens. Truly undiscovered and authentic Greece!

Are you curious about what a flotilla sailing holiday with Portokali can look like? Then read the example route below for a nice impression of the atmosphere. Please note that this is only an example route, purely to give an idea. We never have fixed routes for our flotillas, so that we can optimally adapt to the wind and the wishes of the group. Every flotilla trip with Portokali is different and it is certainly possible to go on the same flotilla several times and still discover different places. After all, there is so much beauty… You can never see it all in one go!

Sample route Monemvasia flotilla

Arrival in Aegina

We leave from the Portokali base: a nice jetty in the village harbour of Aegina, where all the boats are together. After everyone has checked in, is installed on the boat (all beds were already made!) and is drinking the cold wine that was already in the fridge, it is time to get to know the rest of the flotilla guests and the flotilla guidance. We dine on the beach with our feet in the sand!

Aegina – Poros (16 nautical miles)

We start our journey with a trip to Poros. This is a relatively short distance to get used to the yacht, each other and not to have a long day after yesterday’s travel day. After all, it is a holiday! Poros is a beautiful island, with a bustling boulevard where hundreds of boats are moored. Full of restaurants, terraces and bars, there is plenty to do here!

Poros – Portoheli (31 nautical miles)

The next day a nice long trip is planned. Because ‘around the corner from Poros’ there are always some downwinds and the sea is wonderfully flat on the higher shore, this is a nice route to test who can trim the best and who has the tightest steering skills! Arriving in Portoheli, we build a nice raft with all the yachts together. That will be nice swimming all afternoon and evening!

Continued sample route Monemvasia

Portoheli – Plaka (17 nautical miles) From Portoheli to Plaka the next day is “only” 17 miles.
So we can take it easy in the morning and have a nice swim and take the dinghy for fresh bread.
Then we cross the Argolic Gulf and descend through the Peloponnese.
In Plaka, the always cordial Margarita is already waiting for us in Plaka Leonidion. Plaka – Kiparissi (14 nautical miles) From Plaka to Kiparissi the next day is a beautiful stretch of sailing along the impressive mountains of the Pelopponesos.
Kiparissi is in a large open bay and depending on the wind we will choose where to moor. Kiparissi – Monemvasia (22 nautical miles) Monemvasia is on the program today!
The place from which this route takes its name.
We leave Kiparissi on time so that we have enough time in Monemvasia.
The port is on the mainland and we then walk to the peninsula where there is an ancient Venetian town.
For the fanatics, there is a nice hike/climb to the top.

Monemvasia – Elafonisos (30 nautical miles) Round Cape Malea and on to the first island south of the Peoloponnsos.
A cape is always challenging and again you have variable winds and it will become clear which yacht has chosen the best strategy once you round the corner and set course for Elafonisos.
Elafonisos is a very flat island and even has real dunes!
Only the azure waters do remind you that you are definitely not in the Netherlands.
In the bay at Simos Beach we drop anchor.
You have a beautiful anchorage here on two sides of a beach and so we all throw out our anchor, lie free in the bay and cook tonight on board.
What impressions we’ve gotten so far! Elafonisos – Kapsali (26 nautical miles) From Elafonisos to Kythira today, a nice trip downwind to Kapsali on the south side of Kythira.
You can already see the town on top of the mountain beautifully in the bay, but of course we moor in the bay.
If there is room at the quay we moor alongside there, or we anchor.
From Kapsali you can see Crete on a clear day!
We have already sailed that far south.

Schippers in Griekenland

Kapsali – Avlemenos (10 nautical miles) Avlemona is a small and cute place with a very good ambiance.
There is a mini pier where 1 boat can moor, so presumably we moor with long lines to the shore and go ashore with the dinghy.
We take a nice walk through the village and if you just walk out you come to lunar landscape-like ground, where you can see how the sea sometimes haunts here in winter.
Bare rocks where the holes have been punched in – very impressive. Avlemenos – Yerakas (39 nautical miles) Today we carefully start the way back up and a real sailing day is scheduled.
Usually (and with a bit of luck) the wind at the cape is favorable and you can bend nicely with the wind and thus you do not have to tack up much of the way.
In Yerakas is a beautiful lagoon where you have to sail in an S-curve, it’s like a small fjord.
Super sheltered from all wind and waves from outside.
However, there are regular fall winds from the mountains in the country: nice and cool in the summer!
Taking the dingy all the way into the lagoon, or swimming and lounging in the sleepy village is on the plan for this afternoon. Yerakas – Fokianos (19 nautical miles) In Fokianos we are moored in a bay with long lines to shore.
Plenty of time to have a nice swim and enjoy the peace and quiet.
There is a restaurant further in the bay, but we can also go BBQ together, or cook on board, anything is possible tonight!

Fokianos – Dhokos (26 nautical miles) Today we sail half wind again and cross the Argolic Gulf again, we slowly enter busier area, but we choose to keep the peace for 1 more night: Dhokos!
The uninhabited island off the coast of Ermioni with a beautiful starry sky!
There is no ambient light at all and therefore you can really see every speck very well.
Even the Milky Way can be seen.
A beautiful evening to enjoy stargazing and night diving. Dhokos – Ermioni (5 nautical miles) A nice short day today to Ermioni.
This means 2 things: either laze and swim all day and sail a little to Ermioni, or get up early and go to Ermioni and take the ferry to the always mega crowded Hydra.
Both super nice plans, and this way everyone can choose what fits best.
In the evening we had dinner in Ermioni at the oldest restaurant in the Peloponnese!
If you can eat somewhere traditionally good: it’s here!
Joseph, the owner, welcomes us with open arms! Ermioni – Aegina (35 nautical miles) The last day already… But there is still a wonderful day of sailing ahead of us!
With 35 miles left to sail, a short fuel stop in Perdika and then we can take stock: which spot was the most beautiful?
Which sailing day stood out the most?
Actually, the conclusion is quite simple: this trip was the perfect mix for everyone!
Upon our return to Aegina, Ben and Clara are already on the shore to welcome us.
What a wonderful trip we made….
Really completely in undiscovered territory, with a super cozy group!
