Argolic wave
Cruise past Greece's first capital and the beautiful coast of the Peloponnese. Here you will discover authentic Greece!
The Argolic Gulf lies south of the Saronic Gulf, still below the Gulf of Hydra. The only inhabited and largest island in this area is Spetses. There are a few smaller, uninhabited islands though, but a lot fewer than in the Saronic Gulf. The Peloponnese plays the main role here with many nice ports. Porto Heli, Koiladhia, Nafplion, Astros, Leonidio (Plaka), Yerakas and Monemvasia are all options belonging to the Argolic Gulf. There is no real starting port or airport in this area, but when sailing from Athens and you have two weeks, this – combined with the Saronic Gulf and the Gulf of Hydra – is a perfect sailing area.
In the summer months, the harbours are full and bustling, but on the water you don’t notice much of the crowds. Outside the high season, there is plenty of room to moor in all ports, even though most of them are not that big. The Argolic Gulf has big differences in its ports. From small, cosy ports (like Plaka and Astros) to large ports with lots of hustle and bustle (like Porto Heli and Nafplion). There are also plenty of bays where you can drop anchor for lunch or for the night. The wind direction in the Argolic Gulf is predominantly north-east. The further south you go, the harder it can blow. This is because you are then more on the open sea and the wind can have quite a ‘run-up’. The mountains on the Peloponnese make it very difficult to make accurate forecasts, so take this into account and never rely completely on the weather forecast.
