Athens - Saronic Gulf

The Saronic Gulf is the area immediately south of Athens. It consists of part of the coast of the Peloponnese and a number of islands, the best known of which are Poros and Aegina. Suitable for sailors of all levels.

The Saronic Gulf

When you go sailing for a week from Athens or Aegina, this is the area you will sail around. We sail flotillas here every week throughout the season (from early April to November).

Are you curious about what a week of flotilla sailing with Portokali could look like? Then read the example route below for a nice impression of the atmosphere. Please note that this is only an example route, purely to give an idea. We never have the routes of our flotillas fixed, so that we can optimally adapt to the wind and the wishes of the group. Every flotilla trip with Portokali is different and it is also perfectly possible to join the same flotilla several times and still discover different places. After all, there is so much beauty… It will never fit all in one week!

Saronic Gulf flotilla route

Sunday: Athens – Angistri (25 nautical miles)

On Sunday morning we sail away from the Greek capital. We leave the hustle and bustle for what it is and leave for the beautiful small towns and bays that can be found in this area. On the first day this will be a bay on the southwestern tip of Angistri. Here we lie with long lines to a tree and a boulder, about 10 meters from the side. There is nothing here, except one delicious fish restaurant. Tip: ask if they have fresh tuna and order the grilled and/or sushi version. During dinner we see a beautiful sunset with our yacht in the foreground.

Monday: Angistri โ€“ Poros (15 nautical miles)

The next day we start with a dive to loosen the lines, then raise anchor and set sail for Poros. This is an island with a bustling town of the same name. Many restaurants, bars and yachts adorn the boulevard. There is also a great ice cream parlor here with 46 flavors of ice cream. Definitely worth a try. In the evening we enjoy typical Greek Lamb Kleftiko, Moussaka and Stifado. Three dishes that they can prepare extremely well here. We spend the rest of the evening in a bar that overlooks the boulevard and where people dance until the early hours.

Flotilla sample itinerary (continued)

Poros – Perdika (14 nautical miles) The next island we are going to explore is called Aegina.
We are not going to anchor in the main town here, but in a somewhat smaller and quieter village on the south side: Perdika.
This is a fishing village where a small part of the harbor is also deep enough for sailing yachts.
So be careful when docking.
Once at the dock, there is not much to do in this village.
This, however, gives you plenty of opportunity to relax.
Because the harbor is quite open, you can splash into the fresh water from your yacht and the sunset is again breathtakingly beautiful. Perdika – Epidavros (15 nautical miles) Having had two islands, today we sail towards the mainland.
Epidavros: a pleasant village on the Peloponnese.
Epidavros is located in a large bay where you can also anchor freely.
So we do this before entering the harbor.
We prepare a nice lunch on board, feed the fish with the leftovers and swim a little to cool off.
At the end of the afternoon we sail on to the harbor to get a nice spot at the quay.

Epidavros – Vathi (10 nautical miles) Having already had two islands and the mainland, we choose to go for a combination today.
The village of Vathi on the Methanon peninsula.
This peninsula consists of 27 volcanoes and so we are going to climb one of them.
In the late afternoon, when the worst of the heat is over, a pickup will take us up the first part of the mountain.
Then we have to climb and hike another half hour to reach the top.
Once back in port, we dine in the restaurant directly behind our yacht, at a table right in front of our gangplank.
There is absolutely nothing else in this village, so it is great to enjoy the peace and quiet after dinner on the foredeck. Vathi – Athens (32 nautical miles) Friday we sail back to Athens.
This is quite a bit of sailing, so a nice trip to end the week with.
Halfway through we are joined by a school of dolphins who follow us for a bit and seem to wave goodbye.
Goodbye, dolphins.
You have it good here, in the Greek sea!
