Dodecanese

The Dodecanese is the easternmost sailing area of Greece and is close to the Turkish coast. The weather here remains nice well into the fall, so it is particularly popular around the fall vacations.

Dodecanese

The Dodecanese, also occasionally called with the ‘k’ the Dodecanese, is an archipelago of 12 large and more than 150 smaller islands in the Aegean Sea, off the coast of Turkey. This archipelago is a popular destination for sailors, due to its beautiful nature, clear waters and endless sailing opportunities. In addition, the area is especially popular in the post-season, as the weather stays nice for a long time. We even sail with flotillas during and after the autumn holidays (late October, early November), when the weather is almost always lovely! One of the most striking features of the Dodecanese is the diversity of landscapes and coastlines. From the high cliffs of Kalymnos island to the colourful cottages on Symi island, or the volcanic island of Nisiros, there is always something new to discover. Moreover, the waters around the islands here are also very clear and full of life, making it a perfect place for snorkelling, diving and dolphin spotting. There are numerous bays, anchorages and islands to explore, and sailing conditions are usually favourable, with consistent wind speeds and few waves. Except in the summer months (mainly July and August), when the Meltemi can also blow heavily here. This is a stormy wind that usually lasts for a few days and blows mainly over the Cyclades, but certainly makes for strong winds here too. Hence, this area is mainly popular in the post-season – so when the winds are generally calmer.Another interesting feature of the Dodecanese is the rich history and culture present on the islands. Many of the islands have old towns and villages with ancient buildings and monuments, and many relics of ancient times can be seen. Finally, the Dodecanese offer many opportunities for other activities besides sailing. The area is therefore very popular for climbing, hiking, diving and cultural trips. In short, the Dodecanese offers sailors a unique combination of nature, adventure, culture and relaxation. It is a very attractive and varied destination for sailors in Greece, and worth a visit for anyone looking for an unforgettable sailing experience.
