Saronic Gulf
The Saronic Gulf is the area immediately south of Athens. When you spend a week sailing from Athens or Aegina, you will probably float around here with your little boat.
The Saronic Gulf is the sea that lies in the bowl below Athens. The islands of Aegina, Angistri, Poros and Salamina are the inhabited islands in this area, and there are also numerous uninhabited, smaller islets. On the Peloponnese mainland, places like Vathi, Epidavros and Corphos are nice destinations to sail to. On the southern side, the Saronic Gulf merges into the Gulf of Hydra, but this too is often still considered the Saronic Gulf. In this area lie the islands of Hydra and Dhokos. The latter is uninhabited, but a beautiful place to spend the night at anchor.
During the summer months, a fair number of large flotillas sail around, which makes the ports full and lively. Sometimes you have to be a bit creative to find/create a spot. There are hardly any port authorities present to help you with this. Everyone looks for the spots that are suitable for their yacht and after a bit of trial and error, everyone usually finds a good spot. Outside the main season, it is a lot quieter and there is almost always a spot to be found on the quay. The Saronic Gulf has many different ports. Large boulevards around the village, small fishing ports, beautiful bays to anchor and everything in between. If you are going sailing for a week, this area is perfect to let you experience something new every day. If you are going sailing for longer, you can sail via the Gulf of Hydra to the Argolic Gulf to make a longer trip. The wind direction is mainly northeast but this is not very constant. In a week it can be quite possible that you don’t have the same wind two days, which makes it a lot of fun sailing-wise. Almost never a whole week without wind and almost never a whole week of strong wind. The area generally remains free from the Meltemi – a strong, persistent wind in the Aegean, which causes unrest especially in the Cyclades and Dodecanese.
